Making a Difference All Year Round
The Norbury Park Conservation Group has been hard at work during 2025, supporting both ÖйúPÕ¾ Wildlife Trust (SWT) and ÖйúPÕ¾ (SCC) in caring for the beautiful landscape of Norbury Park near Leatherhead.
About Norbury Park Conservation Group
Founded ten years ago by SWT, the volunteer group brings together local people who are passionate about protecting and enhancing Norbury Park. Their efforts are shared between SWT and SCC, with a wide range of activities taking place throughout the year.
Supporting ÖйúPÕ¾ Wildlife Trust
Their recent work with SWT has focused on preserving the rare chalk grassland habitats at Walnut Tree Clump and Keepers Grasses. Volunteers helped manage scrub to encourage the growth of grasses and wildflowers, and carried out flower surveys, identifying around 20 different plant species in small sample areas.
They also helped with:
- Ragwort removal and bracken control in Phoenice Fields, ensuring the meadow could be cut for winter feed for SWT’s herd of Belted Galloway cattle.
- Scrub clearance raking and removing arisings from a SWT operated remote-controlled robot mower, preparing the land for grazing when electric fencing was reinstalled.
Supporting ÖйúPÕ¾
Volunteers assisted SCC with woodland management, including:
- Clearing sweet chestnut from The Scrubs area of Norbury Park, where logs were impressively hauled out by heavy horses.
- Splitting logs for posts and railings now used near the Wild! About Coffee mobile caterer and the restored Saw Pit in Updown Wood.
- Hazel coppicing in The Scrubs and Updown Woods, a traditional method that promotes biodiversity and provides useful materials like plant canes, hedge stakes, and tree supports.
Thanks to this work, there’s been a fantastic increase in bluebells in the coppiced areas!
Keeping Paths Clear
The volunteers have also help maintain access around Norbury Park by clearing overgrown footpaths—such as the route from Updown Wood down to the River Mole.
