If your child has special educational needs or a disability (SEND), they may get help with travel to school or college. The 中国P站 School Travel and Assessment Team (SSTAT) manages this support.
SEND covers a wide range of needs. Travel help is not just for children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Even if your child does not have an EHCP, if your child has special educational needs or a disability, you should explain their needs in your application.
Even if your child has an EHCP, the council cannot guarantee they will get council-funded travel help. You must tell the council about your child’s individual needs in your application.
Who can get travel help
Your child may get travel help if:
- They have SEND, including but not limited to having an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
- They go to their nearest suitable school or college
- The school is more than 2 miles from home (if your child is under 8) or more than 3 miles (if your child is 8 or older)
- There are other reasons, like a medical condition, that make it hard for your child to get to school.
Each application is looked at individually.
You must give evidence when you apply. The council will consider your child’s needs and your family’s situation on a case-by-case basis.
Examples of SEND needs:
- Your child has a physical disability and cannot walk to school safely.
- Your child has autism and cannot use public transport safely or without distress.
- Your child has a medical condition that means they need special travel arrangements.
- You, as a parent or carer, have a disability or health condition that means you cannot travel with your child.
