Course intent
This course is ideal for learners who have completed Stage 1 and are ready to take the next step in their pottery journey. You will build on your existing knowledge and explore new techniques and processes while being encouraged to deepen your creative thinking and design skills. Throughout the course, you will gain a more comprehensive understanding of pottery techniques inspired by both contemporary and historical practices.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- Material Knowledge: Deepen your understanding of the various materials used in pottery. You will explore different clay bodies (stoneware, earthenware, porcelain).
- Design Techniques: You will be encouraged to plan projects that integrate both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Develop your creative and design process, ensuring that your technical skills and materials are used in harmony to create cohesive pieces.
- Production Process: Explore new forms, both functional and sculptural, while practicing more technical wheel techniques.
- Craftsmanship: Develop your knowledge of surface decoration, including glazing, slips, underglazes, and texturing. Experiment with combining different finishes and layering techniques to create visually dynamic pieces.
- Studio Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 2 - Suitable for learners who have completed stage 1 and would like to gain more experience and refine their skills within their chosen subject area. The focus will be on developing more control and proficiency in practice and learning and completing more complex projects.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- A notebook and pen/pencil
- Sensible, closed toe shoes
- An apron or wear old clothes
Additional Costs/Information:
- Materials and Technician Fees: Basic materials and technician costs are included in the course fee.
- Firing Limitations: We are only able to fire pieces that are produced during class time, using materials provided by SAL. Pieces larger than 30cm x 30cm x 40cm cannot be fired in the kiln. Please keep this in mind when planning your projects.
- Studio Time: This is structured to ensure every learner has time to practice on the potter鈥檚 wheel. You will plan projects using hand-building techniques as well as throwing.
Attendance:
- Learners can only attend the sessions they are signed up for. Unfortunately, missed classes cannot be made up in another session.

What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto Pottery & Claywork - Stage 3, Pottery & Claywork Workshops or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
