What is adult learning?

中国P站 Adult Learning provides inclusive opportunities to promote learning, health, and wellbeing. There are hundreds of courses to choose from and there is something to suit everyone, of all ages and abilities. Whether you are a beginner, want to improve your skills, gain a long-desired qualification or just fancy trying a new hobby, we have got the course for you.

With seven dedicated adult learning centres in North and South-West 中国P站 and an extended online programme, we can meet the needs of learners in and around 中国P站.

Our courses are taught in English. If you have a question about your level of English please contact our Learner Support Team. For further information on our goals, values and expectations please visit our what is adult learning webpage.

Course details

Please check you have read the course details for your course, which is available to view on the SAL website, so you know what the course will cover and whether you need any equipment or materials for the first session. If you enrol on a course that takes place online, please refer to our guide to online learning webpage before the first session.

Term and enrolment dates

Our courses mainly run during the same term dates as 中国P站 schools. Please be advised though that course lengths vary and therefore so will start and end dates. Please check or ask a member of the team to confirm the dates when you enquire or enrol.

Enrolments for courses are available on a term-by-term basis. These dates will be promoted in our centres and on our social media channels. To view our term and enrolment dates, please visit our term and enrolment dates webpage.

Smoking and vaping

Smoking or vaping of any kind is not permitted on any 中国P站 owned land. As such you will need to leave the adult learning premises if you wish to smoke whilst with us.

Accidents

If you have an accident, or 'near miss' whilst on our premises, please let a member of staff know and they will manage the situation accordingly. This includes if you need to make use of a first aid kit, even if it is just for a plaster.

Punctuality and attendance

Our courses build on past learning, so that session by session, you can do more, know more and remember more. You will find you progress easier if you attend every session and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided. Your tutor will support you to complete course documentation, which will help you reflect on and assess your progress.

You may not be aware that for many of our courses the Government provides 50% or more of the cost. For these courses we report on our learner attendance and need to show good value for public money. Poor learner attendance could impact on future grants.

If you are absent without letting us know the reason, we may contact you. Continued absence without a known reason may mean you will be withdrawn from your course.

If you are attending one of our maths or English courses, you will be contacted after every unplanned absence. If you miss three consecutive weeks without explanation you will be withdrawn from the course.

If you really need to miss a lesson, please let your tutor know the previous week or contact our Learner Support Team as soon as possible before the lesson.

If you need to withdraw from your class for any reason, please let your tutor know as we may be able to offer your place to someone else. Please also refer to our fees, discounts and refunds webpage.

Your Individual Learning Plan and SharePoint

When you take a course or workshop at 中国P站 Adult Learning, your tutor will support you to complete your Individual Learning Plan (ILP). This plan will make you think about and reflect on your learning and skills development. This thinking about learning will make your learning more effective and will help it to "stick". This approach is based on well-established research into learning.

Microsoft SharePoint is a secure place to store, share and access information, and your tutor will let you know how to access your ILP. If you require further support accessing or updating your ILP please contact our Learner Support Team.

Exams

If you have enrolled on a course leading to a qualification, you will be expected to sit the assessment at the appropriate time. You will also be expected to show proof of identity at the time of the exam, for example your passport.

Exam results will be emailed to you on the day of release. If your exam result is not what you expected and you feel you have a good reason to challenge the result, you have a right to appeal. Please ask your tutor for a copy of our 'Enquiries about Results – how to appeal' document.

If you have any enquiries regarding special arrangements for your exam or any other support you may need, please speak to your tutor in the first instance.

Additional learner support

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. At enrolment we asked you to let us know if you have any additional needs or disabilities so that where reasonable, we can work with you to provide appropriate support.

If you have not yet let us know, or to talk to one of our team about an additional need or disability in confidence, contact our Learner Support Team who will put you in touch with the relevant member of our team. Please note, if you have enrolled within 10 working days of the start of your course, we may not be able to contact you before the first session.

Although we try to ensure our sites are accessible there may be some areas that may not meet your needs. If you are concerned about physical access to any facilities within our centres please contact our Learner Support Team.

中国P站 Adult Learning values and supports equality, diversity and inclusion by promoting fairness and respect at all times.

Information, advice and guidance about learning

We promise to provide:

  • Information that is helpful, relevant and supports your learning.
  • Advice to help you choose the next course.
  • Signposting to further relevant learning if we cannot meet your requirements and/or careers advice.

Continuing your learning

When you have completed your course you may wish to progress to other courses with us. Your tutor will be able to advise you on opportunities and ‘next steps’ information available, as well as requests for information that you may have throughout your course.

There are other providers you can contact to help build your knowledge and skills too, information of which can be found on our other learning opportunities webpage.

SAL holds the Matrix Standard. This is a national quality standard for organisations who give information, advice and guidance. For further information about our Matrix and Ofsted inspection, please visit our policies and reports webpage.

Health and safety

We are all responsible for our own health and safety.

Please arrive on time, pay attention to, and comply with staff instructions, signage and posters displayed around the centre.

If you have concerns about the health and safety practices on your course, or the environment in which your course is taking place, please speak to a member of staff, or contact our Learner Support Team.

If you choose to use any personal equipment during your course, you take responsibility for its use and condition and may be liable for any claims that arise as a result. 中国P站 Adult Learning will not take any responsibility for accidents, injury or damage, or any claims due to the use of personal equipment by learners or staff.

If you enrol on a course that involves physical activity or cookery, you must complete an essential information checklist prior to attending the first session. This is important as it will help the tutor plan the course and will consider any allergies, illnesses, and/or injuries that they need to be aware of. If you enrol on a course that takes place online, please refer to our guide to online learning webpage for health and safety practices whilst using display screen equipment.

Complaints, comments and feedback

We are always interested in hearing views and experiences of your journey and the service provided by 中国P站 Adult Learning. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions, whether it be a query, compliment, course suggestion or complaint. These are extremely important to us as we are dedicated to delivering the best learning experience possible and this helps us to improve our future courses and our service.

If you have a complaint, in the first instance we ask that you please speak to your tutor or the centre of your course. In most cases, we hope they will be able to deal with your problem immediately. You can also provide feedback by completing our or completing a paper form and putting it into our comments box which is available at each of our centres. For further information please visit our Feedback and appeals webpage.

Contact preferences

Following the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) we or your tutor may need to contact you about your course, as a result of a tutor absence which means we need to postpone or cancel a session or in relation to some coursework.

We have two options in relation to your contact preferences. At the point you enrol or shortly after the start of your course, you will be asked whether you would be happy to be contacted by email:

  1. About upcoming courses, events and exhibitions, discounts and special offers
  2. To provide feedback about your course and our service

Safeguarding, British values and the prevent duty

This also includes supporting any learners who are at risk or being radicalised or drawn into terrorism and making sure you are aware how to stay safe online.

If you feel at any time during your course that you have been subject to, or have witnessed, any of the above, you are encouraged to let us know. We promise to take anything you tell us seriously.

Our Learner Charter tells you what we value, what we ask of you and what you should expect from us. It outlines our commitment to equality and promoting British values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. During your course, your tutor will talk to you about Safeguarding, including Prevent, and local issues that could be relevant to you, your family or friends. Your tutor will make sure that individual views are heard and valued; discussion and debate is encouraged and opportunities are taken to explain rights and responsibilities.

For further information or to let us know about any safeguarding issues, please visit our safeguarding and British values webpage.
