Life & Portrait - Drawing (Clothed Model 1 week) - Stage 2

Course intent

On completion of stage 1, this course is designed to help you gain confidence in life drawing by exploring different ways of portraying the human figure. Working from images and a clothed life model for one week, you will focus on specific areas of the body and experiment with various mediums. This course offers a supportive environment to express yourself creatively while building foundational life drawing skills.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Material Knowledge: Learners will be encouraged to use a variety of materials: charcoal, pastel, ink, etc.
  • Design Techniques: How to plot negative spaces to enhance your compositions. Develop an understanding of basic composition principles.
  • Production Process: Learn the key principles of life drawing, including measuring techniques. Break down the body into simplified geometric forms for easier representation. Understand human body proportions and practice quick sketching techniques.
  • Craftsmanship: Focus on improving your technical skills, accuracy, and detail in your drawings. Refine your observational skills to capture the essence of the human body.
  • Studio Practice: Work in a safe environment, following best practices for tool safety and maintaining an organized and efficient workspace.

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Stage 2 - Suitable for learners who have completed stage 1 and would like to gain more experience and refine their skills within their chosen subject area. The focus will be on developing more control and proficiency in practice and learning and completing more complex projects.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • Drawing paper - size A1/A2 and an A1/A2 flip chart of cheap paper is needed for quick sketches
  • Charcoal of mixed sizes
  • Pencils, putty rubber/eraser
  • Bulldog clips or masking tape for the board
  • Tissue or kitchen towels

Any materials and resources that you may need throughout the course will be discussed at induction.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to continue on to a Stage 3 course or enrol onto other Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
