Course intent
In this course you will become familiar with the art of calligraphy using historical manuscripts to study the alphabets and writing with a broad-edged dip pen. Those with some experience will concentrate on exploring more complex layouts together with a new script if appropriate. You will be encouraged to create your own personal projects.
What will I learn?
You will learn
- Design Techniques: Uncial script & gothic script and experiment with colour, design and layout
- Material Knowledge: Gain insights into different materials used & how to mix and write with ink
- Craftsmanship: Develop your understanding of the tools and techniques required, exploring decorative techniques
- Production Process: Learn to use the learned script
- Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements.
As experience grows, we will work on more projects and layouts and study the decoration that was used in ancient manuscripts. Each term we will study a different style of writing and, as a group, we can choose a topic to help us to find quotations, poetry and appropriate decoration. Support is given with your individual goals and calligraphy using a pointed nib can be included where required.
You will need to complete some course documentation to help assess your progress.
