Course intent
This course is designed for those who have completed a beginner drawing course and are ready to take their skills further. In Stage 2, you'll build on your existing knowledge and begin to develop a more personal, confident approach to drawing.
Through a variety of weekly projects, you'll be encouraged to experiment with different styles and materials while learning how to observe more closely and draw with greater intention.
We鈥檒l explore a wide range of subject matter as well as draw inspiration from both contemporary artists and classical masters.
What will I learn?
Design Techniques:
Develop key principles of perspective and composition to strengthen the structure of your work. Engage with a wide range of subject matter, including portraits, the human figure, landscapes and still life
Material Knowledge:
Develop a strong understanding of various materials by experimenting with pencil, charcoal, ink, and mixed media. Discover how different tools and surfaces affect your technique and creative outcomes.
Craftsmanship:
Advance your drawing skills by applying more complex techniques such as shading and proportion. Begin building a personal sketchbook or portfolio that documents your progress and creative development.
Production Process:
Study the work of influential and inspiring artists to deepen your understanding of visual language and to enrich your own artistic practice.
Workshop Practice:
Learn essential health and safety procedures in the studio environment, including the correct cleaning and maintenance of tools and materials, to ensure a safe, efficient, and professional workspace.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 2 - Suitable for learners who have completed stage 1 and would like to gain more experience and refine their skills within their chosen subject area. The focus will be on developing more control and proficiency in practice and learning and completing more complex projects.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
bring the following materials with you:
- A sketchbook (A3 or A4, cartridge paper)
- A range of drawing pencils (e.g. 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B)
- Rubbers (regular and kneaded/putty)
- Pencil sharpener
- Charcoal sticks or charcoal pencils (OPTIONAL)
- Ink pen or fine liner (OPTIONAL for mixed media work)
- Blending stumps or tissue for shading
- Fixative spray (OPTIONAL: for preserving charcoal/graphite drawings)
- Ruler
- Any reference images or inspirational materials you鈥檇 like to work from
Additional materials may be suggested throughout the course, as you explore different techniques and styles. All other specialist materials will be discussed in class with advice and tips on what and where to buy.
What can I do when I finish the course?
Progress onto other courses throughout academic year 2025-26 or progress onto Drawing - Stage 3 from Autumn 2026. Or you can explore other Art courses and workshops.
