Course intent
Learn how to paint in a more ‘abstract’ sense. Explore different approaches to making abstract art through compelling visual presentations, and a broad look at the use of colour, tone, composition, texture and paint application

- Design Techniques: Paint techniques demonstrated by the tutor
- Material Knowledge: The contextual use of materials & tools
- Craftsmanship: Become familiar with visual language by researching abstract 20th Century art
- Production Process: Observation & use of experimental techniques
- Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 2 - Suitable for learners who have completed stage 1 and would like to gain more experience and refine their skills within their chosen subject area. The focus will be on developing more control and proficiency in practice and learning and completing more complex projects.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- a basic acrylic or oil paint set (60ml tubes). Bring what you already have. You can email the tutor with your queries at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk and copy in sophie.artemis@surreycc.gov.uk
- paintbrushes
- pencils, rubber, eraser
- either oil or acrylic painting pad of at least A3 size
- A sketchbook to plan and record your techniques and to reflect on your progress.
Materials and resources you will need through the course will be discussed in your first session.
