Course intent
On completion of Stage 1, this course will advance your sculpting skills, equipping you with techniques to confidently create sculptures. You will work in a supportive environment, receiving one-to-one guidance and participating in group discussions. The tutor will provide demonstrations and ample opportunities for practice, helping you refine your craft and build confidence in your sculpting abilities.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- Material Knowledge: Gain a solid understanding of sculptural materials, focusing on clay while exploring Jesmonite, plastaline, and wax. Through hands-on experience, you will continue to explore techniques for shaping and refining sculptures, building a strong foundation in both traditional and modern materials.
- Design Techniques: Plan and design sculptures by transforming sketches and ideas into tangible works of art. Using life model sketches as a foundation, you will refine your concepts into finished, well-structured sculptures, gaining skills in planning, designing, and creating three-dimensional works.
- Life Model: Create sculptures by modelling from a life model, focusing on accurate human form and proportions. This will help you shape realistic and expressive sculptures, improving your understanding of anatomy, movement, and three-dimensional representation.
- Production Process: Explore the production process of sculpture, from concept to completion. Build wire armatures for larger pieces and delve into casting and moulding with plaster and silicone rubber to create replicas and capture intricate details.
- Craftsmanship: Enhance your skills in measuring and maintaining proportion for accurate, balanced sculptures. Focus on precision and craftsmanship to create detailed, visually appealing works that are also structurally sound, with proper balance and stability.
- Studio Practice: Gain experience in a studio setting, learning best practices for maintaining your workspace, tools, and materials. Maintain the safe use of sculpting tools while ensuring your work area remains organized and productive.
