Independent Living Skills (LD)

Course intent

Develop a range of independent life skills and awareness of safety, hygiene and healthy living, incorporating online safety, whilst improving literacy and communication skills. Improve your confidence, communication, and social skills through participation in a variety of activities.

What will we cover?

During this course, you will have the opportunity to:

Learn how to manage time and money, with an understanding of financial matters

Understand how to stay safe online, including social media and making purchases

Discover how to find and use local services

Recognise health and safety at home, including basic first aid and understanding risks and emergencies.

Make decisions and solve problems

Identify kitchen equipment and learn how to use them safely

Use kitchen tools and utensils safely and learn how to clean and store them properly.

Explore healthy food choices and learn how to prepare and cook them

Understand the value of exercise and how changes can improve your health

Explore hobbies and plan and take part in a mini enterprise sale

Develop an understanding of relationships and appropriate behaviour

Learn how to travel safely and stay safe in the dark

Build confidence and social skills by participating in group discussions and activities

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for Entry Level learners with a learning disability, it is designed to help learners progress from their individual starting point to build confidence, independence, and social skills for everyday life.

This course is suited to learners who have an interest in history and discovering information.

You will need to have some basic literacy and numeracy skills, for example be able to recognise/write some words and ideally read simple sentences.

You must be able to follow instructions, guidance on health and safety and be ready to work as part of a group

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Bring a pen and reading glasses if you use them. For cooking bring an apron and tea towel.

What can I do when I finish the course?

After this course you could progress to another supported learning course, or further courses with 中国P站 Adult Learning. We will meet with you to give information, advice, and guidance on your next step.

Additional information

Bring a drink or money to buy refreshments during a short break.

Carers and/or family members supporting in the class will be required to follow our guidelines and acknowledge they have read our Personal Assistant Agreement.
