Sewing for Home - Sewing for a Stylish Décor - Stage 1

Course intent

In this beginner course, you will gain foundational sewing skills to create stylish home décor pieces. You will learn how a sewing machine works, including how to use different presser feet, stitches, and adjust tensions. Through simple exercises and techniques, you will build your sewing confidence.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Material Knowledge: Understand fabric types, how to match materials, and selecting the right fabric for each project.
  • Design Techniques: How to insert trimmings, zips, and fabric-faced buttonholes, as well as mastering corner techniques, pattern matching, and creating piping.
  • Production Process: Practical skills like measuring, cutting simple patterns, seam allowances, and fabric tolerances, particularly for cushion-making.
  • Craftsmanship: Develop an attention to detail and precision, ensuring your projects are professionally finished.
  • Studio Practice: Work in a safe environment, following best practices for tool safety and maintaining an organized and efficient workspace.

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Stage 1 – This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You will need:

  • A basic sewing kit which should include: fabric scissors and paper scissors, long ‘ball’ head pins, a tape measure, a long straight ruler, disappearing ink embroidery pen, all-purpose hand-sewing and machine needles, seam ripper, a universal bobbin, a reel of good quality all-purpose thread to practice.
  • A selection of assorted furnishing fabrics
  • Notebook and pen

Project-based materials will be discussed and decided in collaboration with your tutor.

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto sewing courses or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
