Watercolour Painting - Mixed Media - Stage 2

Course intent

On completion of Stage 1, this course will help you to focus on developing a bold, expressive painting style through direct observation. You will experiment with a variety of techniques, including soft pastels, charcoal, ink, and watercolour, with an introduction to mixed media methods. Through group discussions and one-to-one support, you will review your work and refine your creative approach.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Material Knowledge: Gain confidence in using watercolour and a mix of other materials, exploring their unique qualities and effects.
  • Design Techniques: Develop a deep understanding of tone, colour, and composition through hands-on practice, group discussion, and tutor-led demonstrations.
  • Production Process: Build confidence in using expressive techniques and methods to create dynamic, bold artwork. Learn how to combine various media to enhance your paintings.
  • Craftsmanship: Refine your technical skills, focusing on control and fluidity in your work while maintaining a bold, expressive style.
  • Studio Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements.

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Stage 2 - Suitable for learners who have completed stage 1 and would like to gain more experience and refine their skills within their chosen subject area. The focus will be on developing more control and proficiency in practice and learning and completing more complex projects.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • Watercolour brushes
  • A palette
  • A pad of watercolour paper (Cold pressed/NOT surface) weight 300gsm
  • Any other media like watercolour pencils, pastels or inks you may already have purchased
  • A pad of A3 cartridge paper
  • Soft grade of pencils (2B to 6B)
  • A soft rubber

Materials will be discussed at the first session with advice on what to bring for the course.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to enrol onto a Stage 3 course or other Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
