Course intent
This sewing class is perfect for those beginning their sewing journey or returning after an introductory workshop. Whether you are working on a personal project at your own pace or refining your existing skills, the tutor will provide individualized guidance to help you succeed. In addition to one-on-one support, you will have opportunities to learn from each other鈥檚 projects and share insights to build a broader understanding of sewing techniques.
What will I learn?
You will learn (depending on chosen project):
- Material Knowledge: Select the appropriate pattern and fabric for your project. Understand fabric types and their suitability for different designs.
- Design Techniques: Make pattern alterations for a better fit or to redesign a garment. Learn how to alter and reinvent garments to suit your personal style.
- Production Process: Gain hands-on experience using sewing equipment, including operating a sewing machine. Learn essential hand-sewing techniques and how to transfer patterns from existing garments. Discover key sewing tasks like completing seams, hems, raw edge finishes, and working with necklines, collars, sleeves, and cuffs. Practice applying openings, fastenings, and zips.
- Craftsmanship: Finish your projects to a high professional standard, paying attention to detail and precision. Ensure that your work is both aesthetically pleasing and durable.
- Studio Practice: Work in a safe environment, following best practices for tool safety and maintaining an organized and efficient workspace.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 1 - This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- Fabric that you would like to use
- Basic sewing kit
- Fabric and paper scissors
- Tape measure,
- Ruler,
- Dressmaking pins,
- Tracing wheel,
- Machine thread,
- Pencil, eraser and note pad.
If you are a complete beginner, please bring some spare fabric for practising on the machine.
You are welcome to discuss your requirements with the tutor before the class starts.

What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor, you may like to enrol onto a Sewing - Stage 2 course, workshop or other Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
