Course intent
On completion of Stage 2 - This course is designed for painters who are ready to experiment with both oil and acrylic painting techniques. Through a combination of sketchbooks, photographs, researched images, and direct observation, you will explore both modern and traditional approaches. You will be encouraged to think outside the box, develop a more creative and experimental style, and receive one-on-one support as you push your artistic boundaries.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- Material Knowledge: Enhance individual skills in tone, color, and composition. Gain confidence in using both oil and acrylic paints for varied effects and techniques.
- Design Techniques: Experiment with different painting styles, drawing inspiration from other artists’ work. Learn to take creative risks and find your own unique voice in painting.
- Production Process: Develop a deeper understanding of the steps involved in painting, from initial concept to finished piece. Explore different approaches for layering, texture, and brushwork in both oil and acrylic mediums.
- Craftsmanship: Focus on refining your technical skills and attention to detail. Learn to apply your newfound techniques in a consistent and professional way.
- Studio Practice: Work in a safe environment, following best practices for tool safety and maintaining an organized and efficient workspace.
- Oil or Acrylic materials you may already have
- A pad of A3 cartridge paper
- Soft grade of pencils (4B or 6B)
- Charcoal
- Soft rubber
- For oil paint, please use low odour solvents such as Zest-It or Sansodor
- Notebook and pen .
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 3 - Suitable for learners on completion of level 2 who would like to progress and gain a solid understanding of their subject. The focus will be on mastering more intricate techniques and creating more complex, finished projects

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to enrol a Stage 4 or other Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
