Course intent
This hands-on course provides a comprehensive introduction to woodwork, perfect for beginners or those looking to improve their woodworking skills. Throughout the course, you will explore the fundamentals of carpentry in a fully equipped workshop. You will complete three set projects that will teach you essential carpentry techniques, culminating in a final project where you鈥檒l apply your new skills to create a planter, garden obelisk, or bar stool.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- Material Knowledge: Develop an understanding of the different materials used in woodwork. You will learn about various types of wood, including hardwoods and softwoods, and how to choose the right material for each project. The course will also cover the properties of different finishes and how materials behave in response to weather and time, helping you make informed decisions about your projects.
- Design Techniques: Learn how to plan and design your future woodwork projects. You will gain practical skills in sketching designs, measuring and marking out dimensions accurately. This will ensure that your projects are well-planned and structurally sound before you begin cutting and assembling.
- Production Process: Understand the step-by-step process of a woodwork project, from measuring and cutting to assembly and finishing. You will work with both hand tools and power tools to refine your technique. The course will guide you through each phase of the production process, focusing on precision and efficiency. Projects will build upon each other to help you progress toward more complex tasks.
- Craftsmanship: Develop high-quality craftsmanship skills by focusing on accuracy, attention to detail, and finishing techniques. You will learn how to assemble joints, sand and finish wood surfaces, and ensure that your work is structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing. Attention will be paid to creating durable, well-finished products that reflect your skill and care.
- Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 1 - This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- A sketchbook and pen
- An apron and closed toe shoes
Your tutor will discuss specific woodwork requirements in the first session.
