Course intent
This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to get the most out of your garden, guiding you through seasonal tasks to keep your plants thriving year-round. You will gain practical experience working outdoors (weather permitting!) developing a deeper understanding of garden maintenance.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- Soil Types & Improvement: Identify different soil types and learn how to enhance soil quality for healthy plant growth.
- Pruning & Planting: Understand when and how to prune and plant while the plants are dormant for optimal results.
- Seed Collection: How to collect and store seeds for future planting.
- Lawn Care: Gain tips on maintaining a healthy, vibrant lawn throughout the year.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve common gardening problems.
- Health & Safety: Proper handling and maintenance of tools to prevent injury in a safe working environment.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 1 - This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- An apron and closed toe shoes
- A notebook and pen
- A pair of gloves
- Photos of your outside space

What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto Gardening Workshops or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
