Oil & Acrylic Painting - Stage 1

Course intent

You will learn the skills needed to gain a deeper understanding of the medium, learning the techniques and processes to help develop your knowledge and skillset.

  • Design Techniques: Learn colour theory & colour mixing
  • Material Knowledge: Gain insights into building up a painting in layers
  • Craftsmanship: Develop your understanding of the tools and brush techniques required
  • Production Process: Learn about the materials used In Oils & Acrylics
  • Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Stage 1 -This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    • A pen/pencil & sketchbook

  • Oil or acrylic paints (if you have any)
  • Canvas, canvas board or canvas paper
  • Brushes
  • A palette and palette knife
  • Low odour thinner for oils such as ‘Zest-it’ or ‘Sansodor’

Materials and resources you will need through the course will be discussed in the first session.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You can continue for a year learning at Stage 1, then move on to Stage 2. We also offer specific one-day workshops.
