Sewing - Hand Embroidery - Stage 2

Course intent

Learn about the wonderful versatility of embroidery with your tutor who is a RSN (Royal School of Needlework) trained professional embroiderer and RSN tutor. Learn new techniques and develop your design ideas to fruition.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Design Techniques: Learn how to sketch your ideas, understand design principles, and refine your concepts, preparing techniques for framing fabric & tracing designs
  • Material Knowledge: Gain insights into different materials used. Understanding these materials will allow you to make informed choices that suit your designs.
  • Craftsmanship: Develop your understanding of the tools and techniques required. This course will help you sharpen and perfect the skills you've learned so far while learning new techniques.
  • Production Process: Understand the process of turning a design into a physical object using the most commonly used stitching techniques
  • Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Stage 2 - Suitable for learners who have completed stage 1 and would like to gain more experience and refine their skills within their chosen subject area. The focus will be on developing more control and proficiency in practice and learning and completing more complex projects.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • a pencil and notebook
  • some light-coloured cotton fabric (eg calico)
  • a variety of stranded cottons or other sewing threads
  • some different sized needles
  • embroidery scissors
  • an embroidery hoop (preferably 8-inch but any size is acceptable)

These items and other optional equipment will be available to purchase on the day at additional cost

What can I do when I finish the course?

• In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto Stage 3, specific one-day Workshops or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
