Course intent
Retreat from every-day life and enjoy a day making patchwork stars. Prepare for Christmas and be environmentally friendly at the same time as making wonderful presents, natty gift bags, comfy cushions or an attractive table runner for yourself, friends and family.
What will I learn?
Whilst attending this practical workshop you will be able to learn new skills in patchwork and quilting, re-visit forgotten techniques and develop existing ones. The Tutor will be available to discuss your individual ideas and projects.
- There will be demonstrations for cutting with a rotary cutter and joining fabrics by machine.
- Fabric colour choice and preparation
- Choose from several patchwork star blocks to suit your ability, and how to construct the block.
- Quilting to suit your block and ability
- Finishing techniques
Please note that larger items may not be completed at the workshop due to time constraints or design complexity, but you will receive information for finishing at home.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This practical workshop is for people who enjoy sewing and is designed for all ability levels. If you are a beginner some familiarity with fabric, thread and a sewing machine would be beneficial. More experienced learners will be encouraged to develop and extend their skills.
Learners with additional needs and disabilities are welcome. Please let staff know if you require any extra support when you enrol and they will arrange for a member of the Supported Learning Team to contact you to discuss your support needs. ÖйúPÕ¾ Adult Learning values and supports equality and diversity by promoting fairness and respect at all times.
For adults aged 18 years or older.
As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
A ‘needs list’ will be sent out before the start of the workshop which will include what you need to bring and where to source fabrics. Some recycled fabrics may be a viable option.
You are required to provide your own fabrics and thread for your individual project and will need basic sewing equipment, eg pins, needles and scissors etc.
Rotary cutting equipment and sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the course.
What can I do when I finish the course?
Patchwork, Quilting and Appliqué - Stage 2 courses will be offered throughout the year by ÖйúPÕ¾ Adult Learning to develop the newly acquired skills and this subject area. Further Saturday Workshops and other Needlecraft classes are also being offered throughout the year.
