Clock Repair & Horology - Introduction to Clock Repair Workshop

Course intent

This 2-session workshop provides a short introduction to the world of clocks and clock repair. You will explore the clock, its mechanisms, and learn how to identify faults and issues. Then, you will carry out key repairs using various techniques, with the goal of restoring it to working order.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

Session 1: Introduction to Clocks & Fault Diagnosis

  • Understanding Clock Mechanisms: Learn how different types of clocks work, including wind-up and pendulum mechanisms.
  • Identifying Faults: Explore common faults in clocks and how to diagnose them.
  • Tools & Materials: Introduction to the tools and materials needed for clock repair.
  • Dismantling the Clock: Learn how to safely dismantle a clock to inspect the internal components.
  • Preliminary Repairs: Begin making minor repairs to restore function, such as adjusting the gear train or replacing missing parts.

Session 2: Repair Techniques & Reassembly

  • Cleaning & Oiling: Learn the importance of cleaning and lubricating the internal parts of the clock to ensure smooth operation.
  • Advanced Repair Techniques: Carry out more complex repairs such as fixing the escapement mechanism or adjusting the pendulum.
  • Reassembly: Safely reassemble the clock and test its functionality.
  • Final Adjustments: Fine-tune the clock to ensure it keeps accurate time and discuss ongoing maintenance tips.

All materials will be provided (unless stated in course description), and you'll leave with your own handmade creations. No prior experience is necessary鈥攋ust bring your creativity and enthusiasm!

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • A clock with a wind-up mechanism and pendulum
  • Plastic boxes with sealable lids to put parts in
  • Any tools you might have (screwdrivers, pliers, tweezers, small spanner(s) or an adjustable spanner etc.)
  • A notebook and pen
  • Closed toe shoes
  • An apron or wear old clothes
