Watercolour Painting - Stage 4

Course intent

This course is designed to help you build on your watercolour skills and advance your creative abilities. You will explore a wide variety of subject matter, from still life to landscapes and natural forms, while learning to apply more advanced techniques in tone, colour, and composition. Improve your confidence and experiment with different materials and styles.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Material Knowledge: Use both drawing and painting materials with greater confidence. Explore how different tools and surfaces affect your results
  • Design Techniques: Enhance your understanding of tone, colour mixing, and creating visual harmony. Learn how to bring balance and emotion into your composition.
  • Production Process: Apply advanced compositional skills and explore perspective across different subject matters. Refine your brushwork and experiment with a variety of media to enhance your watercolour technique.
  • Craftsmanship: Discover and develop your individual abilities through hands-on practice, demonstrations, and group discussion. Form a more personal and expressive painting style.
  • Studio Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements.

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Stage 4 - This stage is for experienced learners looking to perfect their craft and develop a unique style. The focus is on mastering advanced techniques, creating polished and finished projects, and exploring personal expression.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • Whatever watercolour materials you may have (good quality brands if possible)
  • A3 watercolour pad (300 gsm)
  • A sketch pad and pencils HB, 2B, 4B, rubber and sharpener
  • A set of watercolours (Daler Rowney or Windsor and Newton if possible)
  • A set of brushes: round no.3, no.10 and flat 1鈥. Masking fluid

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to enrol onto a Stage 3 course or other Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
